Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities

The New York State Department of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Control awarded this grant to the Cortland County Health Department to cover Cortland, Tompkins and Chenango Counties, known as the Tobacco Free Zone. We work to foster environments supportive of policies that reinforce the tobacco-free norm in our communities. Through community engagement and youth action (Reality Check), we promote local changes that reduce the impact of tobacco use and nicotine addiction, including:

• Reduce the impact of retail tobacco marketing on youth & adults, especially disparately-affected populations;

• Increase the availability of tobacco-free outdoor shared environments;

• Increase the availability of smoke-free multi-unit housing; and

• Reduce or eliminate tobacco waste in outdoor areas.

Mission

To decrease illness, disability and death related to tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, and to alleviate the social and economic burden caused by tobacco use in New York State.
